Strict environmental regulations have led vehicle manufacturers to equip gasoline engines with exhaust emission control systems (catalytic converters) designed to reduce harmful emissions. Today, virtually all modern gasoline vehicles are fitted with three-way catalytic converters (TWC).

A three-way catalytic converter converts the three primary harmful exhaust components—nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrocarbons (HC)—into less harmful substances such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water. It consists of a ceramic honeycomb substrate coated with precious metal catalysts, providing an effective catalytic surface area of up to approximately 20,000 m². The ceramic structure withstands temperatures of up to 800–850°C. Platinum and palladium promote the oxidation of CO and HC, while rhodium reduces NOx emissions.

The catalytic converter operates together with oxygen sensors (lambda sensors) in a closed-loop system that continuously regulates the air-fuel ratio to maintain optimum catalytic efficiency. Oxygen sensors are constantly exposed to high temperatures and chemically aggressive exhaust gases.

Over time, contamination can reduce the efficiency of both the catalytic converter and oxygen sensors. A clogged catalytic converter may result in poor throttle response, sluggish acceleration, reduced engine performance, and increased fuel consumption.
